City of David

Half Shekel Gold Plated Ring

$28

The half shekel ring’s design is inspired by a coin from the end of the Second Temple period. Every Jewish male gave such a coin annually as a gift to the Temple. During the Great Revolt against the Romans, the coin was put into circulation. On one side of the coin there is a branch with three pomegranates and an inscription in ancient Hebrew: “Holy Jerusalem”. On the other side the words “Half Shekel” are inscribed, along with a goblet with the Hebrew letter "Aleph" above it,  marking the first year of the rebellion. The coin was discovered during the sifting of archaeological rubble from the Temple Mount on the Mount of Olives. The coin is dated to the first year of the Great Revolt, 66/67 CE.
