Roughly 3,000 years ago the young King David conquered Jerusalem and made it his capital. Thus began Jerusalem's role as the political and religious center of the Kingdom of Israel. This is the "City of David", the ancient core of biblical Jerusalem. But Jerusalem existed before David. In the excavations conducted on the hill of the City of David, archaeologists discovered remains which predate the times of David by many centuries. Impressive walls, fortifications and waterworkd prove that 800 years before David, an important, well-fortified Canaanite city with an advanced material culture existed there. Egyptian texts from thesecond millenium B.C.E. shed light on Jerusalem's early days as a city-state that dominated a considerable part of Canaan's central hill country. Today, 4,000 years later, the image of Jerusalem's early years is reemerging as the ancient Kingdom of Shalem
